It’s that time of year again! School is starting! I can vividly remember what it was like to have 3 young children in school coming home with a new sickness every other week. While I understand that my children’s immunity was only strengthening throughout this process, there were times when I just wanted a break!
My friends and I have tried over the years to keep our children healthy with natural products as they enter back into the germ pool of school! One of the supplements that has helped our family tremendously is astragalus.
Astragalus in an herb that is called Huang Qi in traditional Chinese medicine. It has many different uses; one of the most common is to strengthen the immune system. Not only does astragalus benefit the immune system, but it is said to have antiviral properties and increase energy levels. The herb is known to support the lungs, liver, spleen, and heart.
Astragalus comes in liquid, capsule, and powder form. The liquid tinctures are the easiest to administer to children. It is important to make sure when purchasing an herb that you are buying a good quality product because there are a lot of substandard ones out there. Your local health food store should be able to point you in the right direction. The dosage should be listed on the astragalus product, but for small children, it has been recommended to me to give one drop for every 6 lbs. the child’s weight. I have also read that astragalus should not be given to a who has a fever.
Let me know if you try astragalus and what you think! As you are all well aware, I am not a doctor and am only pointing you towards some of the natural remedies used in my family! If you are taking other medications or have a medical condition, you should absolutely consult your physician.
